In Ayurvedic tradition, cloves are associated with the Fire and Air elements.
They are described as having heating properties and are considered beneficial for improving digestion. Cloves are noted for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
Those of you in the Northern Hemisphere may want to prepare for the colder months by using clove water. Ayurvedic tradition recommends clove water to remove phlegm, clear respiratory conditions or asthma, and to prevent viral and bacterial infections.
Clove Water Recipe
Place 8 whole cloves into one cup of water. Soak them at room temperature overnight. In the morning, strain the cloves and store the water in a covered container in the refrigerator.
After you brush your teeth each morning, swish 3-4 tablespoons of clove water around in your mouth and then swallow. For best results, use daily.
You should not take clove water if you:
- Take blood-thinning medications: such as like warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel. Eugenol in cloves can interfere with normal blood clotting, which can increase the risk of bleeding. medications
- Have a bleeding disorder: Because of its effect on blood clotting, clove water should be avoided by people with bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia.
- Have a scheduled surgery: To prevent excessive bleeding, you should stop taking clove water at least two weeks before any surgical or dental procedure.
- Are on diabetes medication: In some studies, cloves have been shown to lower blood sugar levels. Including clove water with diabetes medication could cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding: The safety of clove water for pregnant and breastfeeding women has not been sufficiently studied.
- Are allergic to cloves: Some people may experience an allergic reaction, including skin irritation, hives, or difficulty breathing.
