Overview

Review the yogic perspective of health recovery;  the role of trauma and stress physiology and its impact on health. Discussions include: social determinants of illness and health recovery — social, cultural, familial, religious and intergenerational contexts and a systems approach to treatment; How people change and the role of self-efficacy, breaking and making habits and review the yoga therapist role.

In This Course You Will:

  • Discuss the assessment process:
    1. Develop Interviewing Skills
    2. Observation of breath and posture, level of pain, mobility and flexibility
    3. The role of yogic numerology in the process of assessment
    4. Develop skill in keeping case notes
    5. Continue to develop effective communication skills: listening, presence and directive and non-directive dialogue
    6. Identify elements of a comprehensive assessment/identify treatment goals including SOAP process

    Treatment Planning:

    • Develop an assessment informed treatment plan including the role of social/community supports
    • Reinforce the principles of Kundalini Yoga therapy as outlined in Module 1- Matching the intervention to the student, layering, building on successes
    • Learn the importance of ongoing assessment and modification of treatment plan/goals to meet the client’s needs 
    • Tracking progress in case notes
    • Pacing and setbacks

    After completing this module the student will be able to:

    • Demonstrate the yogic and western psychology understanding of how people change
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the social determinants of health and illness including- the social, cultural, familial, religious and intergenerational contexts
    • Demonstrate an understanding of SOAP
    • Demonstrate ability to complete a comprehensive client assessment and the process of treatment planning 
    • Demonstrate how to keep case notes
    • Demonstrate the basic principles of therapeutic relationship

Class Format

The online session is [insert #] hours. Please allow for [insert #] hours of required independent work outside of online class per day. In order to receive a certificate of completion, participation for the full duration of the course, including class discussions and breakout rooms and completion of homework are required. When on Zoom, camera will be on unless agreed upon with faculty.

Homework Assignments and how Students will be assessed: 

Students partner in pairs and role-play a case of a person with anxiety, depression, pain, stress or chronic insomnia. Write a 1,000 to 1,500 word review of the case including key features of the condition, observation, questions to address in an assessment, a treatment plan and rationale for the plan.

Prepare a case presentation.

Assessment and feedback of written assignment will be done by faculty. Presentation to be given during group supervision. Faculty and peer group feedback provided.
